I write you this evening in regards to a serious threat to the Agricultural Education Line Item in the ISBE budget. Sources have informed us that a proposal in the Illinois House of Representatives has been floated that would eliminate the Agricultural Education Line Item.
This is an alarming development and should be taken very seriously by IAVAT members and anyone that believes in the mission of Agricultural Education in Illinois. The proposal has not yet been voted upon, but could be called for a vote at any moment.
Tonight, Jim Craft is reworking an informational document about the Line Item and it’s value to our State, students, and profession. I would encourage you to watch for this document to come across your email in a list serve message tomorrow, and furthermore, I would encourage you to set aside some time in your day to contact your representatives. A quick method of determining your representatives is to enter your zip code into the following website, provided by NAAE:
As you call, please remember to keep a polite, calm, and professional tone. While the prospect of losing the line item is emotional, Agricultural Education has built the support that it has through professionalism, student achievement, and the ability to show return on investment. Please keep in mind as you make contacts that your Representative may be wrestling with many constituent concerns, including the prospects of several major facility closures. Please do not make their situation worse by engaging them with anger.
Again, I would encourage you to watch closely for the forthcoming document from Jim Craft. Please let me know if I can be of assistance in any way to you as you advocate for our profession. It is vitally important that all of our members, supporters, and stakeholders assist in this effort.
